Weavers’ society makes record sale

Special Correspondent

Makers of Thirubuvanam silk saris

Rs.3.81-crore sale in August 2007

Society has 1,836 weavers, 1,576 looms

THANJAVUR: The Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society (THICOSILKS) at Thirubuvanam near Kumbakonam in the district has made a record sale of Rs.3.81 crore in August, according to its special officer S. Prakasan.

Effective steps have been taken to achieve a turnover of Rs.33 crore in 2007-2008, he said in a press release here recently. The society is introducing saris with a minimum price of Rs.2,000 with modern designs and the latest colour combination. The society has been producing saris in the Rs.3,000 to Rs.50,000 price range.

The speciality of Thirubuvanam silk sari is the use of filature silk for both warp and weft, resulting in high quality, shine, uniformity and lustre. The society is using the best silk yarn and pure zari, Mr. Prakasam said.

The silk yarn is dyed in the society dye house and given to weavers based on the design. The weight of the sari is between 450 grams to 1,250 grams. In any type of sari, the silk alone weighs 400 grams and the balance is that of zari, he said.

A design committee has been constituted and it visits Chennai, Dharmapuram and Bangalore often for collecting designs. Further monitoring is done with respect to production of saris at every level — purchase of silk yarn, dyeing, purchase of zari, weaving and appraising and maintaining quality. THICOSILKS has become number one in pure silk and fine zari sari production and sales among co-operative societies in India, Mr. Prakasan added.

Established in 1955, the society has 1,836 weavers as members and 1,576 looms.
