TIRUCHI: The National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) in Tiruchi is likely to be upgraded as a Project Directorate for Banana during the XI Plan period. The NRCB, established in August 1993 at Thayanur, near Tiruchi, is a premier institution engaged in research on banana crop and value-added products from the fruit. Once upgraded, eight research centres in various banana growing States across the country will be brought under the institution. It will also bring in more funds for research and ensure coordinated research across the country. “A Quinquennial Review Team of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has recommended the upgrading after a review of centre’s performance,” the NRCB Director M.M. Mustaffa told reporters here on Wednesday. The NRCB, at present, is working on three new high-yielding and disease resistant varieties and all of them are currently undergoing multi-locational field trials, which are expected to be completed next year. The centre is also engaged in developing the technology for producing banana starch, which can be a substitute food for diabetics. Research is also underway on producing pickles from banana peel, which goes waste now. A Salem-based company has started commercial production of banana stem juice, another product with medicinal properties, with the technology provided by the NRCB. The centre has developed the technology for producing banana stem candy, which is rich in dietary fibre. National meetThe NRCB and the Association for Improvement in Production and Utilisation of Banana would jointly host a national conference on Production and Utilisation of Banana for Economic Livelihood and Nutritional Security at Tiruchi from October 25 to 28. The conference would formulate strategies on boosting banana production and productivity. It would have 12 thematic sessions in areas such as gene safeguard and management, bio-technological approaches, breeding strategies, precision farming and supply chain management. About 200 research papers would be presented during the conference, which would include oral and poster presentations. An exhibition featuring the latest trends in banana cultivation, tissue culture, fertigation and value addition will also be held.
