HYDERABAD: The Government has punished as many as 225 engineers in the Irrigation Department following reports by the Vigilance Commissioner, Anti-Corruption Bureau and General Administration Department citing them as guilty in different irregularities.
Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah announced this at a press conference here on Wednesday to refute criticism by Telugu Desam President N. Chandrababu Naidu that corrupt officials are being left scot-free.
He said the three Government agencies which had gone into cases of corruption against irrigation engineers, had recommended action in 249 cases. Asked how B. V. S. Prakash Rao was promoted as engineer-in-chief, Irrigation, even after he was kept in judicial custody for a few days following raids on his house, the Minister said “but, till then no charge has been framed against him ”. K. Bhagyatha Reddy was similarly elevated to the same post in 2001 after ACB raids on his house in 2001 as no charge was filed against him till then, he added.
