Vaiko, MDMK workers arrested

Staff Reporter

POLLACHI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko was arrested along with 1,120 party cadres for blocking trains at the Pollachi junction on Wednesday.

They were protesting against the transfer of the 79-km Palakkad-Pollachi-Kinathukadavu stretch to the Palakkad railway division. All of them were released in the evening.

Addressing party workers, Mr. Vaiko said the decision to transfer the stretch to Kerala was a betrayal of the people of the region.

Mr. Vaiko recalled that a meeting of certain MPs, convened by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad recently, had decided to transfer the stretch to the Palakkad division from the Madurai division and retain Coimbatore and Tirupur corridors in the newly formed Salem division.
