‘TDP neglected irrigation projects’

HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party has ridiculed Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s decision to undertake ‘project baata’ (inspection of irrigation projects) and accused him of neglecting the irrigation sector during the TDP’s regime.

“A party that completely ignored irrigation projects is now talking about checking the quality of works,” Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy observed at a press conference here on Wednesday.

“Due to substandard construction, the Congress Government is spending Rs. 180 crores to repair projects taken up during the TDP regime,” he pointed out.

Poor quality works had affected Velugodu, Chitravati, Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir, Alaganuru, Maddileru, Kaulasnala, Kandaleru, Cheyyeru, Vengalrayasagar, Owk, Rallapadu and Buggavanka reservoirs.

Government had to spend money to take up repairs of Telugu Ganga I and II reservoirs and Nagarjunasagar right canal works.

He said the TDP leaders owed an explanation for the poor maintenance of crest gates of Buggavanka reservoir that resulted in flash floods in Kadapa town in 2000.

Mr. Reddy said irrigation and farm sector suffered badly during the nine-year TDP rule.
