New Delhi: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday said the Ramar Sethu affidavit was uncalled for and the government had made a mistake. “However, it has done the right thing by rectifying it and we welcome it,” said party spokesman D.P. Tripathi. Mr. Tripathi said since the apex court was seized of the matter, political parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham, should await the verdict and “not politicise the issue.” He, however, declined to comment on the demand for the resignation of Culture Minister Ambika Soni, saying it was an internal matter of the Congress. Nuclear dealOn the concerns of the Left parties on the India-U.S. nuclear deal, Mr. Tripathi said the NCP did not agree with their view-point but as they were supporting the United Progressive Alliance, their views had to be kept in mind. The Left parties should participate in the discussions within the UPA-Left committee without any “pre-conditions” such as not operationalising the deal for six months. Wheat imports issueComing to the defence of party chief and Union Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar on wheat imports at higher prices, Mr. Tripathi said it was a decision taken by the Empowered Group of Ministers and approved by the Cabinet. On a letter written by Mr. Pawar to the party MPs asking them to work in their constituencies, he said political parties should always be ready for elections.
