dated September 21, 1957: Mao’s praise for India

The Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, said in Peking on September 19 that he had no doubt that under the leadership of Mao Tse-tung, “socialism will become more democratic and humanistic.” The Vice-President, who was replying to a toast at a banquet given in his honour by Chairman Mao, turned to the Chinese leader and said: “You do not regard Marxism as a rigid creed, but as a dynamic faith. I have no doubt that, under your leadership, socialism will become more democratic and humanistic.” Earlier, extending a warm welcome to Dr. Radhakrishnan, Chairman Mao said: “The Chinese people have always held in high esteem the industrious and talented Indian people. We congratulate the Indian people on every achievement they have made in their peaceful construction. We appreciate the brilliant contributions made by the Indian people to the cause of peace among nations. We are particularly grateful to India for the righteous support she has given to China in international affairs.”
