Inter-school quiz competition evokes enthusiastic response from children

As many as 28 teams from in and around Vijayawada participate

Nalanda Vidya Niketan wins the first prize

VIJAYAWADA: Right from the word ‘go’, the cheerful young ones embarked upon a spirited journey to rediscover the genius within and unveil their myriad capabilities before the audience at the ‘inter-school quiz competition in mathematics’ for students of 9th and 10th classes, a unique programme organised for the whiz kids of mathematics by the Andhra Loyola College (ALC) on Thursday.

During the refreshing event, student teams displayed an amazing talent for solving puzzling questions picked from the wide-ranging works of local, national and international mathematical scientists. No student missed any poser on any event and discovery relating to the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the legendry Indian mathematical genius.

The gleeful smile on the little faces on being posed a familiar question sent out strong signals of strength, perspiration and determination that the future citizens of the country will be capable of displaying at any moment of time. Now and then, a team caught in the glare of confusion following a difficult question in the quiz had many eyes rolling in a ‘we-know-it’ manner.

The eagerness to seize the moment and have all of it was writ-large on the faces of each and every student, who turned up for the big show from different schools in the city and surrounding towns, including Gannavaram and Vuyyur.

As many as 28 teams, with each one comprising three students, from schools affiliated to the State Board and Central Board participated in the preliminary round, of which 16 made it to the final round.

Celebrations

ALC Correspondent Fr. D. Showraiah called upon the young ones to wake up and build their personality on the great experiences that they would come across during their course of events such as the present one organised by colleges and schools. “Not all of you will return home with a prize. But the experience of having participated in such an event remains with you. It is on this experience that you can build your character and personality,” he said, inspiring the students to face the litmus test with more confidence.

ALC Vice-Principal G.M. Victor Emmanuel and head of Mathematics Department M. Arokiasamy joined in with the applause of the audience, as the hall broke into a momentary celebration of the closing event. As expected, the show did not end without the mention of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s famous commitment that children should be given inspiration at every available opportunity.

The team from Nalanda Vidya Niketan walked away with the first prize, followed by the team from Sri Kakatiya High School.
