A different experience at Space School

‘Newspapers augment problem-solving and critical thinking skills in children’



Special class: A resource person of The Hindu’ s Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme interacts with schoolchildren of the Space Central School at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR of Sriharikota on Wednesday.

SRIHARIKOTA: It was a different experience altogether for students at Space Central School at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, and Pulicatnagar of Sriharikota as they listened to resource persons at the Newspaper In Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu on Wednesday.

As part of the programme, resource persons explained to students objectives of the NIE programme as well as advantages of reading newspapers in particular The Hindu. “Newspapers, being the most inexpensive living textbooks, augment problem-solving and critical thinking skills besides sharpening the creative abilities among children. Moreover, they act as an excellent resource for languages as well as subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and others.” Prior to that, Principal of the Space Central School, Sriharikota S. Radhakrishnan launched the programme.

Outlining the advantages of the programme, Regional General Manager (Circulation) Chennai N. Krishnan said that the NIE programme through classroom based sessions had been making a sincere effort to nurture basic skills such as linguistics, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal among school children by using the newspaper as an effective tool in most of the sessions. “The modules have been designed in such a way that they suit the co-curricular needs of class VII, VIII and IX students.”

“The programme on vocabulary as well as on palindrome and anagram are very interesting,” said B. Divya of class VI and Ch. Kavya Lekha of class VII student. According to B.Deepika of class IX and Prakash of class VIII, the NIE Programme is very informative and inspiring. “Particularly the programme on behavioural skills is very interesting.”
