Time to shop: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at The Hindu MetroPlus Lifestyle Show 2007 at Pragati Maidan on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Hall 12 at the Capital’s sprawling Pragati Maidan was abuzz with activity on Thursday morning as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated “The Hindu MetroPlus Lifestyle Show”.

Ms. Dikshit took particular interest in artefacts and handicrafts from Thailand and expressed a desire to procure some of them when time permitted. Browsing through the stalls and followed by a bevy of camerapersons and security personnel, Ms. Dikshit said: “This is a smart event and a pleasant aesthetic experience. I will come here again and go through the products at leisure.”

Four-day event

Spread over 4,800 square feet and promising visitors a quality shopping experience at earthy prices, the four-day event showcases over 240 stalls of products ranging from consumer electronics and automobiles to handicrafts and jewellery.

Bringing an array of international products under one roof, the event offers merchandise from Thailand, Pakistan and Malaysia. Visitors can also expect good deals on computer peripherals, stereo systems, fabrics, kitchen accessories and bathroom fittings. The exhibition will also serve as a launching pad for new products such as “Ehsan Perfumes” and decorative wooden artefacts from Vietnam.

Steady stream

Though it was early in the day, a steady stream of visitors had started trickling in through the gates. Some exhibits had already been put up while others were being readied by eager stall-keepers who scurried about to place key products where they could be eminently displayed. LCD television sets, wooden and artificial furniture, porcelain artefacts and leather footwear were all meted out equal treatment with a feather duster.

A successful shopping extravaganza, the first Lifestyle Show was organised in Chennai in 2004. Since then it has grown phenomenally in popularity to become an annual fixture in nine cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Kochi before coming now to Delhi.
