Karunanidhi’s remarks “uncalled for,” says Bitta

Staff Reporter

They have hurt people’s sentiments

M.S. Bitta

RAMANATHAPURAM: The former president of the Indian Youth Congress and chairman of the All-India Anti Terrorist Front, M.S. Bitta, on Thursday said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s remarks against Lord Ram would affect the prospects of the Congress in the next Lok Sabha elections.

Crores of people worshipped Lord Ram and had faith and belief in Ramar Sethu. Though it was Mr. Karunanidhi who questioned the existence of Ram, it would indirectly affect the Congress, as it had an electoral tie-up with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Hence, the Congress should reconsider its alliance with the DMK, he told reporters at Rameswaram, near here.

Sethu project

Terming the DMK chief remarks against Lord Ram as “uncalled for,” Mr. Bitta said as a ‘devotee’ of Ram, he was hurt and the emotions of crores of people were hurt. If the issue was not resolved amicably, it could create a backlash in the country. The Government should come forward to implement the Sethu project without damaging the Ramar Sethu. People’s sentiments and beliefs should be respected.

Oath

Earlier, accompanied by D. Kuppuramu, national secretary of the Rameswaram Rama Sethu Protection Movement, Mr. Bitta took oath at the Agnitheertham shore to protect Ramar Sethu.
