Ex- Speaker demands special Assembly session

Correspondent

Government not taking corrective measures, says Pratibha Bharati

VIZIANAGARAM: Former Speaker and TDP Polit Bureau member Pratibha Bharati has demanded that the Chief Minister convene a special Assembly session to discuss the allegations of corruption at high places levelled by former Vigilance Commissioner R.C. Samal rather than attacking N. Chandrababu Naidu, TDP president.

Speaking at the interim review meeting on the progress made since the beginning of "Palle Palleku and Vaada Vaadla TDP" from September 6 till Thursday, Ms. Pratibha Bharati said that the Rajasekhara Reddy Government was whiling away time by attacking Opposition in and outside the Assembly instead of taking corrective measures. She said that during the 15-day "palle palleku" programme people pointed out problems/irregularities in drinking water, sanitation, street lighting, distribution of pensions, allotmentof houses under ’Indiramma’ etc.

Though the Chief Minister had announced houses and pensions to all the eligible, notwithstanding political affiliations, in reality Congressmen alone were receiving the benefits, she said.

She said Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had gone back on his promises such as effecting prohibition in phases, supply of LPG to DWCRA groups at Rs. 100. Instead, the revenue from liquor sales which was Rs. 3,000 crores during TDP rule touched Rs. 9,000 crores during the last 40 months and the LPG was now being sold at Rs. 305, she added.

Party observer K. Radhakrishna Reddy said that the response from people to "palle palleku" programme was good and the party cadres must consolidate their support.

District president Y. Ramana Murty presided.
