Refugees provided with houses, basic amenities

The Collector instructed officials to take steps to redress their grievances


NAMAKKAL: The district administration has constructed a total of 100 houses at a cost of Rs. 10lakh for the Sri Lankan refugees staying in the M. Mettupatti camp, said Collector G. Sundaramurthi. Inspecting the camp on Wednesday, the Collector further added that the administration has created adequate basic amenities including provisions for the supply of protected drinking water, toilets and street lights . The district has three refugee camps - Paramathi, Erumapatti and M. Mettupatti. A total of 307 families are living in Paramathi, 304 in M. Mettupatti and 31in Erumapatti. Refugees in M.Mettupatti camp appealed to the Collector to install four more street lights and direct the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to stop the buses near the camp. The Collector instructed the officials to take steps to redress their grievances. Earlier, Mr. Sundaramurthi conducted a special mass contact programme for the members of transgender community. More than 100 members participated in the programme and urged the district administration to provide them free house sites and family cards. Employment opportunities should be created and loans should be provided to the self-help groups formed with the members of the community, they said.

The Collector, while replying, assured that measures would be initiated to provide family cards, free house sites and loan assistance. Deputy Collector Arignan, District Social Welfare officer Padma Kumareshwari, Mahalir Thittam Project Officer Muthumeenal and senior officials were present.
