The CITU organised a procession in protest against the nuclear deal KOLKATA: There were no differences between West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on nuclear power, senior CPI (M) leader and president of the State unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Shyamal Chakravarty has said here . At a function here on Monday, the Chief Minister stressed the need for non-conventional sources of energy and its use based on indigenous technology. “We just cannot avoid nuclear power,” he said. Mr. Bhattacharjee’s remarks were construed by some political quarters as support to the India-United States nuclear deal, when the CPI(M) and other Left parties are opposed to the pact. The CITU organised a procession here in protest against the signing of the nuclear deal. Asked whether there was any contradiction in the party’s stand on the 123 agreement and the State Government seeking U.S. investment for industries, Mr. Chakravarty said: “There is no harm in accepting such capital for investment and signing agreements to set up new industries.” As for the nuclear agreement, the CPI(M) is opposed to operationalisation of the deal. The United Progressive Alliance government should not go ahead doing so as it “is surviving with our [the Left parties’] support, Mr. Chakravarty said.
