Women sentenced for false evidence

NEW DELHI: A court here has sentenced a woman to five-year rigorous imprisonment for giving false evidence under oath in order to implicate four men in a criminal assault case. The woman had also extorted Rs. 30,000 from the accused for ensuring that they were not convicted.

Apart from the prison sentence, Additional Sessions Judge Deepa Sharma on Thursday also slapped a fine of Rs.1,000 on 49-year-old Meera. She had alleged in 2004 that four men -- Sunil Kumar, Sandeep, Surinder Kumar and Hari Om – had criminally assaulted her in Paharganj. A case was registered by the police.
