THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has touched off a fresh controversy by addressing United Democratic Front (UDF) legislators on the Assembly premises where such meetings are not permitted. Taking strong exception to the KPCC president’s action, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan has warned of stern action if such incidents recurred in future. In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the Speaker termed the KPCC president’s action a violation of the rules and precedents of the House and said that stringent action would be taken if similar things happened in future. Addressing the UDF legislators after giving lemon juice to the UDF MLAs who were on fast for the last three days to press for Forest Minister Benoy Viswom’s resignation, the KPCC president had accused Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan of having tried to shield Mr. Viswom and warned of a strong agitation in the days to come. Although UDF convener and former Speaker P.P. Thankachan was also present on the occasion, he did not address the gathering. The other UDF leaders present on the scene also did not speak.
