TV channel sought for beaming growth activities

Special Correspondent

Another for promoting tourism and culture suggested

NEW DELHI: Karnataka on Wednesday urged the Union Government to start a national television channel exclusively for beaming development activities of the Union and State Governments and another specifically for the promotion of travel, tourism and culture in the country.

Speaking at the concluding session of the 26th State Information and Cinematographic Ministers’ conference here, Karnataka Information Secretary I.M. Vittala Murthy and Commissioner for Information K.V.R. Tagore called for exemption of telecast fee for State Government programmes on Doordarshan channels.

Referring to the recent spate of sting operations shown on television channels, they said though the State could accept sting operations as a way of collecting information, it could not tolerate those aimed at blackmail and character assassination.

Laws were needed to put an end to the glorification of crime, violence and vulgarity in the electronic media, they added.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi chaired the conference.
