TUMKUR: Samskritika Vedike, a representative forum of cultural associations of Tumkur District, organised the first State-level Kannada Cultural Festival at Kalpataru Gardens here on Thursday. Udayabhanu Prakashana sponsored the event, which is slated to be an annual affair hereafter. Various competitions in music and fine arts were held for schoolchildren as part of it. Vidyaniketana School won the first place. Sridevi Vidyamandira stood second and Basaveswara School finished third. The performance of children from Government Higher Primary School, Yellapura, near here, however, earned appreciation from the gathering, which comprised writers and artistes. S. Mallikarjunaiah, Tumkur MP and former Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, gave away the prizes to Subhash (Vidyaniketana); Veena, G. Kamala and Mohammed Arif Pasha (Sridevi Vidyamandira); Manasa (Basaveswara School); Arpita (Government HPS); T. Sukhanta and Tejasvini (Nrupatunga School); Y.P. Dakshayini (National School); Manjushri (Vivekananda School); Chickanna (KSEF College) and Y.H. Girish (Sarvodaya College). Mr. Mallikarjunaiah said the Union and the State Governments should extend support to cultural festivals being organised in rural parts so that talents in villages could be fostered. Immadi Karibasava Deshikendra Swamy of Sidlehalli Ballekatte Math said people could realise divine power through loving their children and caring for them. A busy man could find solace in life if he pursued a fine art, he added. E. Lokeshwarappa, advocate, welcomed the gathering. S. Ramalingaiah, advocate, proposed a vote of thanks.
