Government to get tough with schools

For filtering students: Minister

Fresh syllabus to come into effect from next year

Department to issue guidelines to all schools

MADURAI: The Government will get tough with schools detaining/filtering weak students of classes IX and Plus-One to boost their results in public examinations, according to Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu.

“An analysis was done by the School Education Department and we found that schools are following the unhealthy practice of detaining students… so that their results in public examinations are not affected,” Mr. Thennarasu told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

“We are going to be tough, beginning this academic year, with private and government-aided schools. The reason for detaining a class IX student should be valid. Just because a student is scoring poor marks, schools cannot filter him,” the Minister said.

The department would issue guidelines to all schools and ensure they were followed.

Subjects in higher secondary vocational stream would be “reviewed” soon.

A fresh syllabus would come into effect from the next academic year.

“We know that vocational subjects are not in line with ‘employability’ for students. So the department decided to review/streamline the existing subjects by forming a committee to come up with proposals,” he said.

The department had received budgetary allocation for starting ‘language labs’ in government schools in a phased manner.

More focus would be given to developing communication skills among higher secondary students through these laboratories, the Minister said.
