Lend an ear to this plea

The terminology used to describe physical deformities and weaknesses has undergone a humane transformation. The terms such as blind, the deaf and the dumb are passé. According to the new norms, the deaf belong to the hearing impaired category. But the change in nomenclature has had its unheard version as well. The defect could be as low as 10 per cent in certain people while in some others it could be 100 per cent. Can both be considered alike? That is the question be ing asked by the Ernakulam District Association of the Deaf. There are several instances in which those with a lesser dose of impairment are called by the government to fill up vacancies reserved for the hearing impaired. The Association has raised the issue before the authorities. The pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
