Mystery shrouds death

Staff Reporter

46-year-old mentally challenged Darshana had been living alone

NEW DELHI: A 46-year-old mentally challenged woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her Baljit Nagar residence here on Thursday.

According to the police, Darshana was found dead with a head injury by her neighbours in the morning. They told the police that she was mentally unsound and had been living alone. While her daughter is married, her other relatives live elsewhere. About a month ago she had fallen from the stairs and sustained head injuries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Robin Hibu said though it appeared to be a case of accident, investigations had been initiated to establish the cause of Darshana’s death.

Local residents, however, alleged that she was attacked by a mysterious man who targets women. For the past two years incidents of women being attacked while sleeping have been reported from Baljit Nagar, Ranjit Nagar, Prem Nagar and nearby areas, the police said.

The locals, who alleged that a couple of women were found dead under similar circumstances in the recent past, suspect that Darshana had fallen victim to the same mysterious assailant.

The police said the exact cause of Darshana’s death would be established by post-mortem that would be performed at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital on Friday.

A case of culpable homicide amounting to murder has been registered at the Anand Parbat police station and patrolling in the area intensified. Over a dozen policemen have been deployed there to keep a close watch on any suspicious activity.
