One week of dry weather needed for repairs, says Chief Minister Hyderabad’s population may cross 1.2 crore in two decades
Bumpy ride: Motorists having a tough time negotiating potholes under the bridge near Rail Nilayam in Hyderabad on Thursday. HYDERABAD: Citizens reeling under atrocious road conditions in the capital have been urged to be patient for a month by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Continuous rain is preventing authorities from taking up road repairs and after a month’s time, all thoroughfares will have fresh carpeting, he said at a public meeting on Thursday. The meet held at the Goshamahal police stadium was meant to launch the Indiramma scheme for identifying shelter-less poor and eligible pensioners but Dr. Reddy could not avoid referring to bad roads that had been putting people to much suffering. “We need one week of dry weather to do any repairs,” he said. “We will speed up widening of several roads and this along with the Outer Ring Road and the metro rail would go a long way in making vehicular movement easier,” he averred. Wherever necessary flyovers and road over bridges were would be constructed. InconvenienceThe Chief Minister obliquely remarked that there could be some problems for a short while when infrastructure projects were taken up. “There were traffic problems when the Raj Bhavan road was being widened and later the movement was smooth,” he said. Infrastructure projects that were underway could take up to two years and more and these would provide a solution to meet the city’s growing needs including traffic. Underlining his Government’s resolve to improve the basic infrastructure like roads, water supply, drains, etc., Dr. Reddy pointed out that the capital population, which had reached 65 lakhs, might cross 1.2 crores in the next two decades taking into consideration the migration levels. Work was also underway to provide ample drinking water supply and the plan was to supply water for two to four hours every day to citizens here. All eligible poor without a house would be getting one soon. “We will ensure that Hyderabad turns into a beautiful city with good infrastructure,” he said. Ministers -- Mohd. Shabbir Ali (Power), Mukesh (B.C. Welfare) Sabitha Indra Reddy (Mines), G. Chinna Reddy, party leaders and senior officials were present.
