GMC holds talks on water supply

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation on Thursday initiated a series of discussions with a Kolkata-based GVK Consultants to finalise a comprehensive water supply plan for the city.

City Mayor Kanna Nagaraju, Municipal Commissioner Siddartha Jain, engineering officials and corporators were present in the meeting.

The consultant had placed before the GMC the findings of the Comprehensive Water Supply Study covering in detail the various sources of water supply and ways of augmenting water supply to meet the needs of the city till 2036.

The survey estimated the demand for treated water at 189.83 in 2021 and 248.91 MLD in 2036 as against the existing demand of 121.42 MLD.

The project cost has been pegged at Rs.267.02 crore, while the operation and maintenance costs were pegged at Rs.17.85 crore.

Assessing the sources, the survey reported that out of the two available water sources, Buckingham canal system provides 28.35 MLD while the Guntur Canal System provides 233.01 MLD.

Of the two treatment plants at Sangam Jagarla Mudi and Takkelapadu, the survey proposed to construct two treatment plants of 45 MLD capacities each by 2036.

Mayor Nagaraju said that discussions would continue on Friday before coming to a conclusion on the report.

Meeting the drinking water requirements of a fast growing city has been one of the major challenges of the GMC. Rather than the availability of water resources, glaring loop holes in the supply has been a perennial problem.
