Hubli-Dharwad
Directive to take up relief measures on a war footing HUBLI: The five flood-affected districts of Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot, Bijapur and Koppal will receive Rs. 20 crore from the State for flood relief works. After conducting an aerial survey of the flood-affected villages, along with Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and other ministers, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the amount had been released on September 19. Relief measuresHe said the Deputy Commissioners of these districts had been directed to take up relief measures on a war footing. They have been asked to give priority for providing drinking water and also maintaining cleanliness to prevent an outbreak of an epidemic, the Chief Minister added. PreventionThe Chief Minister admitted that the situation could have been managed efficiently if precautionary measures had been taken. The State Government would chalk out programmes to prevent recurrence of such situations in the days to come, Mr. Kumaraswamy said. He said officials had been instructed to provide quick relief and individual compensation to the affected people. However, it would take some time to repair the infrastructure that was damaged due to rain, he said. To a query, the Chief Minister said that although the Members of Parliament from Karnataka were raising issues concerning the state in Parliament, it had not made an impact. “Before every Parliament session, the MPs are provided information on various issues concerning the State, which they later raise in Parliament. However, the exercise is not that effective. Probably the State requires strong regional parties like those in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu,” the Chief Minister observed.
