Advani offers prayers at temple

To offer worship: BJP leader L.K. Advani and party cadres at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai on Thursday.

MADURAI: The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, L.K. Advani, on Thursday offered prayers at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here. Accompanied by State president, L. Ganesan, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, S. Tirunavukarasar and Ravi Shankar Prasad, Mr. Advani went around the temple premises.

The Executive Officer and Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, B. Raja, explained the significance of the various structures in the temple. Mr. Advani, who was visiting the temple for the third time, also offered prayers to both Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.

Talking to waiting media persons, he said that he was keen to visit this renowned temple and offer his prayers. Mr. Advani was in Tirunelveli on Wednesday to attend a party executive committee meeting.

Security blanket

A security blanket was thrown around the temple with police personnel being deployed in strength. The four Chithirai streets that surround the temple were cordoned off with the entry of vehicles barred till the BJP leader left. The bomb squad was also deployed with many policemen equipped with hand-held bomb detectors.
