NEW DELHI: The convocation at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), scheduled for September 25, is now likely to be held on October 23, Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry officials said here on Thursday. Court intervention The date of the convocation, to be held after a gap of two years, was announced following the intervention by the Delhi High Court, on a petition moved by a batch of students who wanted degrees for applying for higher studies in foreign universities. The Ministry had endorsed the date of the convocation, where 650 students are to be awarded degrees. However, sources now claim that September 25 was fixed by the AIIMS Director without the approval of Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, who is also AIIMS president. “The Minister has a prior appointment on September 25. We have just suggested an alternative date on October 23 as the date was fixed without the Minister’s consent,” the sources said. The AIIMS had no choice but to accept it. The AIIMS Director has to issue a notification at least one month in advance and also give advertisements in newspapers before holding the convocation so that the recipients could come to receive the certificates.
