Mangal gets Olympic quota place

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Mangal Singh Champia of Railways earned India a quota place for the Beijing Olympic Games on Thursday at Xi’an in China.

The 28-year-old, training under the banner of Mittal Champion Trust at Bangalore, ended second best to Mark Javier of the Philippines at 111-107 in the individual final.

Rahul Banerjee was very much in the picture for the second berth but failed to hold his nerve in the bronze medal play-off to Wan Mohammad Khalmizam Ab Aziz of Malaysia in two-arrow shoot off after both tied at 112-112 after 12 arrows.

In the first tie-break shot, both hit a perfect 10 and in the second the Filipino got a 10 as against the Indian’s 8.

The third Indian Jayanta Talukdar, seeded fourth, went down in the quarterfinals to fifth-seeded compatriot Banerjee at 109-110 and Banerjee himself lost to Champia in the semifinals at 116-109.

India’s failure to earn two quota places from this tournament meant the chances of fielding the men’s team in Olympics is now remote.

The three-member Indian women’s team, consisting of Dola Banerjee, Chekrovolu Swuro and Laishram Bombayla Devi, had earned three Olympic quota places from the Leipzig World championship in July.
