Mysore varsity appointments panel ‘doctors’ qualification of candidate

Staff Correspondent

The candidate had not submitted his thesis at the time of interview

Syndicate member favours rejection of the candidate

MYSORE: A brazen attempt by the University of Mysore’s Board of Appointments to recommend a candidate to the post of a lecturer by prefixing “Dr.” to his name even before he is awarded a Ph.D. has failed to pass the scrutiny of the university’s Syndicate.

The Board of Appointments constituted by the University of Mysore for selection of a lecturer in Kannada Translation, blatantly ignored norms and guidelines by recommending an “ineligible” candidate for the post, causing much heart-burn among qualified aspirants.

The Hindu has documents to show that the board, with Vice-Chancellor J. Shashidhar Prasad as its ex-officio chairman, had in a letter to the Syndicate recommended A.Y. Vijaykumar for the post by prefixing “Dr.” to his name even before he was awarded a Ph.D.

Though Mr. Vijaykumar had submitted his thesis, it had neither been evaluated nor had been approved for award of a Ph.D. at the time the candidate appeared for the interview on July 26 this year. Yet, the board prefixed “Dr.” to the candidate and recommend his name for the post, ahead of other aspirants. However, the Mysore university Syndicate, which takes a final decision on approving the recommended candidates, smelt a rat. When a member of the Syndicate called for records of the recommended candidates, the august body learnt that the recommended candidate neither had a Ph.D. nor had he cleared the National Eligibility Test.

“It was a clear attempt to mislead the Syndicate. For, the Syndicate does not have any other document except the recommendation letter from the Board of Appointments,” a Syndicate member told The Hindu.

The Syndicate member suggested that the candidature of Mr. Vijaykumar be rejected and the waitlisted candidate, B.P. Donur, be issued the appointment order.

Meanwhile, Mr. Vijaykumar’s thesis was taken up for evaluation on a “fast-track”. He was subsequently awarded a Ph.D. The Syndicate meeting held on September 19 decided to refer the matter back to the appointments board for fresh interview and selection.

Informed sources in the university have questioned the Syndicate’s decision to refer the matter back to the Board of Appointments.
