Celebrating the poet: A participant of the ‘Bharathi -125’ event recites a poem in praise of Subramania Bharathi at the Bharathi Memorial Museum in Puducherry on Friday.

PUDUCHERRY: For the group of Subramania Bharathi aficionados, who came from across the country to the Union Territory, a visit to three temples of deities that the poet had penned songs on was refreshing. They recited poems on Desa Muthumariamman, Siddhanantha Swamy and Vinayagar Naan Mani Maalai, on whom Bharathi has composed songs in metres such as ‘venba’, ‘virutham’, ‘agaval’. The visit had given them all a boost by the time they reached the Bharathi Memorial Museum on Easwaran Koil Street to recite poems of the poet.

“Not just these songs, but Bharathi has also composed poems such as ‘Kuyil Paattu’, ‘Kudukudupaikaaran Paattu’ and one on ‘Pizhaitha Thennam Thopu’,” said Senkamalathayar, who is in charge of the museum.

The group had walked from one place to the next, and later, participated in the inauguration of a three-day international conference ‘Bharathi – 125’ at Pondicherry University. The event was organised jointly by the Subramania Bharathi School of Tamil Language and Vanavil Cultural Centre.

K. Ravi, founder, Vanavil Cultural Centre, said scholars from London, Singapore, Malaysia and the U.S. would take part in the conference. “We have received over 200 research papers on various topics, including ‘Bharathi and medicine’, ‘Bharathi and science’, ‘Bharathi and Sikhism and Christianity’,” he said.

Special sessions will be held at Pondicherry University’s convention centre during the weekend.

On Saturday evening a special lecture on Bharathi would be delivered by Kumari Ananthan in the presence of A. Anbarasu, Secretary, Tourism. Later, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will meet the scholars and present awards to them.
