724 candidates in fray in Shimoga

SHIMOGA: As many as 724 candidates are in the fray in for the September 28 urban local bodies’ elections in Shimoga district after 171 candidates withdrew their nominations.

There are 185 candidates in the fray for the elections to the Shimoga City Municipal Council.

Twenty-five candidates withdrew their nominations while 137 and 158 candidates are in the fray in the elections to the Bhadravati City Municipal Council and the Sagar City Municipal Council respectively.

There are 78 candidates in the fray in the elections to the Shikaripur Town Municipal Council after 22 candidates withdrew their nominations.

Thirty-eight candidates are in the fray in the elections to the Tirthahalli Town Panchayat while 43 in the race in Hosnagar Town Panchayat elections.

Thirty-six candidates are in the fray in the elections to Sorab Town Panchayat and 49 are in the fray in the elections to the Shiralkoppa Town Panchayat.

Meanwhile, BJP district unit president Girish Patel has suspended the seven party workers for having contested as the rebel candidates after being denied the party ticket. They are Ashok Pai (ward 20) M.R. Prakash (ward 22) Satyanarayana Rao (ward 3) in Shimoga, V.Mahesh, Chandrakanth Jingade and Satishbabu in Sagar and Jagannath in Sorab.
