Sequel to shipping agents’ move to take vessel to deep water port Kakinada: There is fresh trouble in the anchorage port with the move of the shipping agents to take the vessel – MV Eastern Star – to the deep water port to unload a part of the imported urea cargo following a technical snag that has cropped up with the breaking down of one of the cranes on board. The ship touched the anchorage port with 17,500 tonnes of urea and berthed on September 2. Unloading of urea started the next day. Some 16,000 tonnes was unloaded by Sunday. However, a part of the stock in the fourth hatch weighing 1,500 tonnes could not be unloaded owing to the malfunctioning of the crane for the past few days, forcing the vessel agents to seek permission for unloading the same at the deep water port. However, the Port Workers’ Union and the Steel Barge Owners’ Association raised objections as under the existing practice the traditional cargo of anchorage port should not be handled at the deep water port. Since the anchorage port was not having any dry dock facility, the crane could not be repaired and it became necessary to handle the balance cargo at the deep water port where shore mounted crane was available. To resolve the tussle, the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce convened a joint meet on Thursday but except a minor headway, no final decision was taken owing to the absence of Steel Barge Owners’ representatives. Vanamadi Veerababu and Sattibabu, president and secretary of the HMS-led Cargo Boats and Steel Barge Workers Unions and Khaza, representative of shipping company, besides V. Raghavulu Babu, president of Clearing and Forwarding Agents’ Association and Dantu Surya Rao, chairman of the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce, took part in the deliberations. The Port Workers Union agreed to move the ship to deep waater port as a special case.
