Centre will help in flood relief: Oscar

Udupi: The Union Minister of State for Labour Oscar Fernandes said on Friday that the Union Government was ready to help the State in any manner as flood relief to the rain affected region of North Karnataka.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Fernandes said he had himself taken interest in the matter of providing relief to the rain affected areas. Even the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was ready to help in this regard. The Union Government had a formula on the financial assistance to be provided, which had to be adhered to by the State. “There will be no denial of funds to the State. It will get its due,” he said.

The Minister said the Mangalore-Hassan broad gauge works had been completed, but a landslide had affected the operations. The Safety Committee of the Railways had sought some more time to streamline the system. Mr. Fernandes said that Union Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had assured him that the Mangalore-Hassan broad gauge line would be open to passenger traffic in October. “The safety of the passengers are of paramount concern,” he said.
