dated September 22, 1957: Western Zonal Council

The Union Home Minister, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, has appealed to the people to strive towards the emergence of a larger understanding, awareness and effort in regard to the development of economic resources and the integration of the spirit of the nation. Inaugurating in Mysore on September 20 the first meeting of the Western Zonal Council, comprising the States of Bombay and Mysore, he said the country had suffered greatly in the past by a fundamental lack of national coherence. “We were conquered from without when our will to pull our united weight together was corroded from within,” he said. Referring to the work of the Council, he expressed the hope that it would function in an atmosphere of tolerance and open-mindedness and make the concept of inter-State cooperation “a fruitful and living reality.”
