dated September 22, 1957: Integration in US schools

The US Government on September 20 obtained a legal injunction ordering Governor Orval Faubus of Arkansas to stop interfering with the integration of white and Negro students at Little Rock High School. Federal Judge Ronald Davies issued the injunction after Mr. Faubus’s lawyers had walked out of the hearing, declaring that they did not recognise the court’s right to rule on the issue. Judge Davies said Mr. Faubus, who used State troops to stop Negroes from entering the school on the ground that he wished to prevent disorders, had thwarted a plan which had been approved by the courts. The injunction he granted also applied to the commanders of the State troops used by the Governor.
