MUMBAI: After being fined for not appearing in a case related to inflammatory speech, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray was arrested and released on bail at his residence here on Friday. The Mumbai police executed a bailable warrant following directions from a city court hearing the matter. Sessions judge S.J. Shah had directed the police on Thursday to execute the bailable warrant against Mr. Thackeray. He was released on a personal bond of Rs. 10,000 immediately after the arrest at his Bandra residence. The warrant was first issued on February 8, 2007 by a magistrate at the Railway Mobile Court in Andheri. Munna Tripathi, Nationalist Congress Party activist, had filed a case against Mr. Thackeray and Sanjay Raut, editor of the Sena’s mouthpiece Saamna. He had objected to the Sena chief’s speech at a function in June 2006 to commemorate Shiv Sena’s anniversary. He alleged that Mr. Thackeray had used objectionable language against the minority community and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in his speech, published in Saamna the following day.
