HASSAN: A bandh call given by the Congress in Belur town on Friday was observed in toto. All shops, business establishments, hotels and cinema houses remained closed. Schools, colleges and public transport facilities, however functioned as normal. Congress activists, led by former minister B. Shivaram, MLC S.M. Anand and District Congress Committee president A. Manju took out a procession and presented a memorandum to the tahsildar demanding suspension of Circle Inspector Nagaraj Anne Gowda. On Thursday, the last day for withdrawal of nominations, Belur Circle Inspector of police allegedly summoned Congress candidate Gurupada Swamy to a nearby rice mill and pressurised him into withdrawing from the contest. In a statement made to the police in Hassan, Mr. Swamy said the inspector had threatened him with dire consequences if he did not withdraw his nominations. Mr. Shivaram, told The Hindu here on Friday that a memorandum in this regard would be presented to the Election Commission on Saturday. “We demand immediate suspension of the Inspector. Till then, he should not be entrusted with election work,” he said.
