16 vessels waiting for loading or unloading cargo Chamber for streamlining barges allotment Kakinada: The inclement weather and the sea becoming rough owing to depression have hampered the operations at the Anchorage Port here for the past two days. The loading rate has come down drastically with hardly a few workers attending the job and barges movements got restricted. Unless the weather is cleared, the situation is unlikely to improve. The Anchorage Port is once again facing the problem of congestion with as many as sixteen vessels waiting for either loading or unloading the cargoes. Of them thirteen are exporting rice, while the remaining are import vessels. Three more vessels are expected to touch the port within a day or two. To cope up with the traffic, the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce requested the Steel Barge Owners’ Association to streamline the barges allotment so that all the sixteen ships could be worked, with the first arrived vessels getting priority. The shipping trade sources said that the barge owners had agreed to allot ten barges to the first arrived vessel and seven each in case of imports from the second vessel and seven barges for first arrived and four for the next in case of imports following the principle of order of priority. They feel that the existing fleet of eighty-nine steel barges are inadequate to cope with the demand and needed to be increased. The committee constituted at the high-level meet held at Hyderabad recently, is expected to submit a report on various issues confronting the port, especially on according permission for construction of twelve more new barges.
