VIJAYAWADA: The flood in the Krishna reached a peak when the discharge touched 5.57 lakhs cusecs on Friday morning and then began receding slowly towards the evening. The level of water at the barrage went up to 14.8 feet at the peak of the flood and gradually dropped to 13.6 when the discharge dropped below the 5-lakh cusec mark in the last couple of days.

Floodwater inundated the bottom half of Durga Ghat and entered areas like Tarakarama Nagar, which are located practically on the Krishna riverbed adjoining the flood bank. The discharged remained rock steady at 5,56,618 cusecs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then began dropping slowly to 4,84,480 cusecs by 6 p.m.

A marked reduction in the inflows to the river from tributaries like Muniyeru, Kattaleru and Wyra was recorded on Friday with a reduction in the rainfall. The inflows into Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects were also below the 5-lakh cusec mark with Srisailam receiving 4.53 lakh cusecs and NSP receiving 4.22 lakh cusecs.

Residents of several houses that were inundated shifted their valuables to makeshift tents pitched on the flood bank and slept there instead of going to the relief camps arranged for them.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation authorities said 1,565 persons of 476 families had been shifted to the relief camps. As many as 8 motor pumps were used to flush out water from low-lying areas.
