VISAKHAPATNAM: The Government Hospital for Mental Care and Sneha Sandhya, an organisation for senior citizens, organised a programme here on Friday to mark the World Alzheimer’s Day. The programme was meant to create better awareness about Alzheimer’s dementia and other dementias occurring in the old age. The most common symptom of dementia was the gradual loss of memory leading to behavioural and other disturbances. The day was named after a German psychiatrist and neurologist Alois Alzheimer who first described the condition in 1906. Professor of Neurology of King George Hospital and Andhra Medical College K. Venkateswarlu said there was no cure to the disease but it could be controlled to a great extent if diagnosed at a very early stage. Diagnosis
The diagnosis was possible by noticing the symptoms. There were no tests and scans to detect the disease. Some medicines were available now to stop the problem becoming acute, Dr. Venkateswarlu said. Superintendent of the GHMC G. Bhagya Rao described about the disease, the reasons for the elderly being effected by the problem, and the measures to be taken. Vice-Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority G. Venkatram Reddy, Chairman of the Eisai Pharmaceuticals of India Garg, Sneha Sandhya’s president P.G.V.K. Murthy and secretary T.V.S. Rao, and a professor of GHMC N.N. Raju and others spoke.
