HYDERABAD: What happens to children when they are rescued from child labour? Well, the stock reply from any district official is that they are rehabilitated immediately under various Government-sponsored schemes.
Nevertheless, these days, district officials are finding it difficult to extend reasonable boarding and impart vocational training to them, which is so important for rehabilitation. While the child rescue team of Hyderabad district, on an average, rescues 20 children every month, they don’t have enough space to accommodate them. The twin cities have three transit homes of which one is meant for girls. But they don’t have enough space to accommodate all the rescued children.
“The two transit homes for boys are not enough. There are 200 children in these homes, but the number keeps on increasing. We have requested the Government for a new transit home,” says Project Director for National Child Labour Project, Hyderabad district, S. Ravi Kumar.
