CHENNAI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday came out in support of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the Ramar Sethu issue. Everyone had the right to express his opinion, he told reporters. An attempt was being made to scuttle the Sethusamudram project in the name of Ramar Sethu. There was no scientific evidence to prove that the sethu (bridge) was man-made. It was only a natural formation. It was the BJP which sanctioned the project during its rule. Now it was trying to gain political mileage out of it with an eye on the next Lok Sabha election. But it would not succeed. It tried to exploit religious sentiments in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections but failed, he said. On the nuclear deal, he said his party had explained its stand.
