Nagercoil: Tamilalayam, a Nagercoil-based social and literacy organisation, conducted an awareness programme on Ramar Sethu on Friday. Eminent Sri Lankan marine scientist Sachithanandam, an expert on the oceanography of Sethusamudram region Melanmai Ponnusamy addressed the programme. Presiding over the programme, Tamilalayam Director K. Pachaimal said that the programme was aimed at enlightening the common man on the political, social, scientific and mythical significance of Ramar Sethu and to bring out vital facts on the issue, as it became the topic of national debate. “There was no man made bridge in the Gulf of Mannar. There were lots of sand dunes, which served as a natural barrier to prevent sea erosion.” Mr. Sachithanandam made a slide show depicting the basic facts on Ramar Sethu. Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan offered shawls to the speakers at the meeting.
