NAMAKKAL: The district administration should initiate immediate measures to regulate collection of toll in the daily and weekly vegetable markets, the farmers said. At the grievances redressal day meeting held here on Friday, they alleged that persons, who had taken the markets on lease, were collecting exorbitant toll from them. Despite repeated complaints, officials had not initiated any concrete efforts to sort out the issue. They suggested that the district administration set up a committee comprising farmers for each market to monitor and regulate toll collection. This would help prevent the lessees from fleecing the farmers. The farmers also urged the administration to remove encroachments on water carrying channels and tanks in the district. A number of water bodies in the district had fallen into the hands of encroachers. The encroachments on the Chinna Thambipalayam Lake in Tiruchengode block were not removed for the past several years, they complained. AppealFarmers also appealed to the Animal Husbandry Department to vaccinate cattle against foot-and-mouth disease. Replying to a query, Agricultural Engineering officials said that the State Government had reduced the charges for hiring tractor and earth mover from the department. District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj presided. Joint Director of Agriculture K.N. Sathyaprasad and senior officials were present.
