Madikeri: Secretary-general of the Codava National Council (CNC) N.U. Nachappa on Saturday urged the State Government to include the CNC in the expert committee constituted by it to find lasting solutions to the “Jamma” tenure, “Bane lands” and other issues in the district. In a memorandum to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Mr. Nachappa said the CNC welcomed the formation of the committee. “Jamma rights” were synonymous with the Kodava community, and the CNC had been demanding a special guarantee for preservation of the culture, heritage, language and property held by the “Jamma holders” in Kodagu, he said. Vested interestsMr. Nachappa alleged that certain vested interests including bureaucrats in Kodagu had tried to create confusion with regard to the “Jamma”, “Bane lands” and other issues in the district. The officials had interpreted the tenures in accordance with their own whims and fancies, compounding the problems, he said. The CNC also wanted the Jamma property to stay with its holders in Kodagu, he said. It would oppose the alienation of such property under any form, especially to the land mafia. The expert committee formed by the Government to find permanent solutions would be incomplete without the CNC in it, Mr. Nachappa said.
