Honouring substance: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy inaugurating the function organised by the Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Shimoga on Saturday to mark the birthday anniversary celebrations of M. Visvesvaraya. SHIMOGA: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has emphasised the need for emulating engineer-statesman M. Visvesvaraya. He was inaugurating a function organised by the Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry to mark the birth anniversary celebrations of Visvesvaraya here on Saturday. “We should take pride in enlightening our youth on the achievements of great Indians such as Visvesvaraya, instead of excessively focussing on examples from the West, he said. Visvesvaraya had set many high ideals in life by differentiating between official duties and personal responsibilities, and never used government machinery for his personal needs. An ideal society could be ushered in by imbibing such ideals. Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara, who was the chief guest, said that Visvesvaraya had played a pivotal role in industrialising not only the State but also other parts of the country. Great administratorHe said it was interesting to note that though Visvesvaraya was a great engineer, he showed equal mettle in administrative work with his contribution to the fields of education, health, banking, power and irrigation. Engineer from the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited Ganajana Sharma delivered a special lecture on Visvesvaraya. President of the Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry K.V. Vasanthkumar presided over the inaugural function.
