Shortage of manpower hits civic works in Kancheepuram

Staff Reporter

Resolutions seeking infrastructure development lying in the cold storage for months

KANCHEEPURAM: Problems between two groups of councillors has affected civic work in certain municipal wards of Kancheepuram town.

People of the town have been complaining about disruption of drinking water supply, mounting garbage and clogging of underground sewer network. All complaints with the municipality have been in vain, they allege.

Municipal sources said they were unable to attend to the complaints owing to shortage of manpower and equipment. However, councillors owing allegiance to chairman V. Rajendran said that a particular group was responsible for the sorry state of affairs in certain wards .

Any request to improve civic conditions in the wards represented by the councillors belonging to a particular party (the one which Mr. Rajendran belongs to) were not considered by the officials, they alleged.

While several resolutions seeking infrastructure development in some wards were put in the cold storage for more than eight months, tenders were called for execution of cement road in the wards of councillors who have come together against the Municipal Chairman, they added.

Garbage near a famous temple was not cleared for months as the ward councillor had openly expressed his solidarity with the Municipal Chairman, defying the political alliance, they added.

According to sources, a group has reportedly submitted a petition to the Regional Director of Municipal Administration in Chengalpattu seeking permission to move no-confidence motion against Mr.Rajendran.
