RWAs to have greater say in development works

Staff Reporter

Can suggest improvement in civic amenities

“This amount could be hiked if constructive suggestions are submitted by the RWAs”

RWAs lauded for improvement in maintenance of parks, streetlights, increase in green area etc.

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to allow the residents’ welfare associations a greater say in development works in the Capital, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced that an amount of Rs.50 lakh per year drawn from “My Delhi I Care Fund” would be placed at the disposal of the Deputy Commissioners at the district level. The RWAs would now be able to suggest works relating to improvement in civic amenities in their respective areas.

Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day “Bhagidari” workshop, Ms. Dikshit said if necessary the Government would even enhance this amount provided constructive suggestions are submitted by the RWAs. Lauding the role of the RWAs in bringing about a substantial improvement in maintenance of parks, streetlights, increase in green area and implementation of various people-friendly schemes, the Chief Minister said through the Bhagidari programme the Government had sought to cement the relationship with the people. “It has given a real shape to the concept of people’s participation in governance and monitoring of various projects,” she said.

Expressing the view that the RWAs have been close partners in the endeavour to reduce pollution in Delhi, Ms. Dikshit also expressed confidence that such interactive programme would help in understanding the needs of the RWAs and go on to improve the way people live in the Capital. Significantly, Ms. Dikshit, who is also Chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board, announced that the Board has acquired a new technology that would help in identification of choking of sewer lines from the ground level without going for any digging. She said the Delhi Government had also empowered all RWAs in the New Delhi area by providing them with an office in a porta cabin. She said all the MLAs had also been urged to release money.
