NEW DELHI: To address issues and concerns of hospital waste at the national level, the Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management (ISHWM) and the Directorate of Health Services, Delhi, organised a two-day annual conference on “Integrated health care waste management: Mainstay towards patient safety” that ended here on Saturday. The organising secretary of the conference, K. S. Baghotia, said the conference was aimed at sensitising all participants towards sound waste management practices. “With increasing population, urbanisation and industrialisation, the role of hospitals comes into foreplay since health care institutions generate infectious and hazardous waste posing danger to the human health and environment,” he said. The president of the society, Air Marshal (Retd.) L. K. Verma, said: “The Commonwealth Games are just round the corner and Delhi is going to have a large influx from participating countries. Apart from developing infrastructure we should strengthen our health care delivery system.” The society, he said, had been active in providing a platform for discussion and bringing about change in the attitude and perception of health care planners and other stakeholders. Basic rights“We understand that patients have some basic rights, and one of the basic rights of an individual when he or she gets admitted in a hospital is that no extraneous infection is allowed to be contracted. No effort should be spared to ensure the scientific management and disposal of all types of health care waste,” Mr. Verma asserted.
