Dara Singh gets life term in priest murder case too

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: A trial court in Orissa’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday sentenced Dara Singh and three others to life imprisonment for killing a Catholic priest in September 1999.

Dara Singh is already serving life imprisonment in the Baripada circle jail in Mayurbhanj for killing Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons in Keonjhar district in January 1999.

District and sessions judge Sachidananda Sahu, who awarded the life term to Dara Singh, Jadunath Mahanta, Rajkishore Mahanta and Chema Ho, acquitted 17 others. The court examined 26 prosecution witnesses.

Dara Singh and others killed Father Arul Doss on the night of September 1, 1999 at a church in Jambani village.

In the Staines murder case, Dara Singh was awarded the death penalty by a trial court in Bhubaneswar. The High Court, however, reduced it to life imprisonment for lack of strong evidence.
