HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has accused the Congress and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy of being gripped by election fever and becoming insensitive to the problems of people, particularly those affected by the floods. At a press conference here on Saturday, senior TDP leaders E. Peddi Reddy, Tammineni Seetaram and P. Chandrasekhar lambasted the Congress leaders for pulling out all the stops and celebrating “Indiramma Sambaralu”, neglecting their primary responsibility of alleviating the suffering of people. Focussing their criticism on implementation of the Indiramma housing programme, the leaders said poor quality of houses apart, the allotment of houses was being handled by a committee of Congress leaders who made sure that only their party supporters were given houses. Thousands of rupees earmarked for the programme was going to middlemen, they alleged. Mr. Seetaram said people of the backward Srikakulam district were reeling under the impact of floods caused by the swollen Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers. “Neither the district Collector, nor Revenue Divisional Officer nor even a Mandal Revenue Officer has gone to the people to help. The Chief Minister or Ministers should have gone to them and assured them of assistance. Instead, they are busy with their own party programme,” he said. Mr. Chandrasekhar said the Chief Minister is apparently doing nothing to stem corruption in the implementation of every Government programme in every village.
